Can you say YEEHAW?
It set me back $629 total (including the $20 FFL transfer fee for the stripped lower receiver – everything else came to the house).
Purchased a stripped lower from Gunsmoke Enterprises (http://www.gunsmokeenterprises.net) for a steal at $65 back in early November.
Then I needed to decide what I wanted for the rest of the rifle. I knew I'd need an ambidextrous safety selector since I shoot lefty. While making up my mind, I did pick up a detachable carry handle for $35. Bought a couple of GI (metal) magazines for $5 each, and also a couple of the Magpul pmags for $10 each.
Was initially thinking of a 20" barrel but after handling several 20" and 16" barreled AR-15's I decided on the 16". Even though long range accuracy is better in the 20", the balance seemed off. The 16" just plain felt better to me. So I ordered a 16" rifle kit from Del-Ton (http://www.del-ton.com/Rifle_Kit_p/rkt101.htm), which worked out to $514 including tax and shipping. Just got a basic kit, with no frills or upgrades. I’ll probably get a sling for it and have the option to get a scope if I really want to but not sure if I’ll do that or not.
Had the opportunity to assemble the rifle yesterday. A friend of a friend puts them together all the time. I probably could have figured it all out myself, but felt much more comfortable letting a veteran show me. What he did in just under two hours I might have spent six on. Plus I had peace of mind knowing that all was well. Got a chance to test fire and wow it shoots like a dream. Didn't have any long range testing available to me this weekend, so I just tried it at around 35 yards. Will need to sight it in to 100 yards in the near future.
