I've been wondering that too. I'm wondering/hoping that in the coming books we'll get even more snippets from the world of the Council and get to see some of the politics moving the world of EDEN. It's obvious that he died for a reason, but what that reason is as of now I can't figure out.

We have some conspiracy theorists here! I think he's pretty dead. I'd almost be willing to bet on it. However, the list of possible "suspects" responsible could be quite lengthy!
